The BBSA has made adoption of the child elements of EN1320:2009 by making it mandatory for all members by amending its code of practise.
The BBSA is the only trade association for the blinds and shutter industry in the UK and was instrumental in ensuring that child saftey was included in the only European Standard covering internal blind performance.
The BBSA continues to work on revisions to the European Standard with its counterparts in Europe to ensure that the scope of the standard covers all relevant blind styles.
Solar gain refers to the increase in temperature in a space, object or structure that results from solar radiation. Sunlight is made up from ultraviolet, visable and infrared wavelengths. Nanometers (nm) are the units used to measure the suns wavelength.
The shortest, Ultra Violet, are 250-380 nm. Visible rays (light) are short wave 380 -780 nm. Infra red are long wave, 780 -2500 nm (also known as heat.) Objects which are struck by sunlight absorb the shorter radiation from the light and the re-radiate as longer infrared wavelengths, which produce heat. This affects the glazing because when the rays go through glass, the glass is more transparent to the shorter wavelengths, therefore the longer infrared wavelength will not pass back through the glass heating up the room causing solar gain. Where the radiation is absorbed by the shading system some is transmitted back into the room and some is trapped between the blind and glass. Unless it is vented with an air flow (from mechanical ventilation or an open window) it will heat the blind which will become a radiator. An external shading system is effective in reducing solar gain as it is mostly converted into long wave heat when it hits the blind.
Most that is transmitted through or absorbed by the blind will then not pass through the glass and is trapped as hot air between blind and glass. As hot air rises it is the dissipated above the blind by natural convection (It rises and draws cooler air up between blind and glass.)

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is announcing that millions of units of blinds, including roman shades and roller blinds. These window coverings present a serious risk of strangulation to young children.
CPSC has received reports of five deaths and 16 near strangulations in Roman shades since 2006 and three deaths in roll-up blinds since 2001. Strangulations in Roman shades occur when a child places his/her neck between the exposed inner cord and the fabric on the back side of the blind or when a child pulls the cord out and wraps it around his/her neck. Strangulations in roll-up blinds occur when the lifting loop slides off the side of the blind and a child’s neck becomes entangled on the free-standing loop or if a child places his/her neck between the lifting loop and the roll-up blind material.
The recalled Roman shades and roll up blinds were sold by a variety of manufacturers and retailers, including major discount department stores, home improvement stores and window covering manufacturers and retailers. Remedies vary among firms from repair kits to refunds.
